Exploring Creativity: Creating Animal Art with Colorful Beans

Art projects that engage children with tactile materials are not only fun but also educational. Projects like this encourage kids to think outside the box as well as embrace the material used (less control over a material can feel scary at first so encourage your child to explore and remind them that mistakes happen but that is just a sign that we are learning). Using colorful beans to create simple images of animals is a fantastic way to encourage creativity and fine motor skills in young learners. In this blog post, we'll guide you through a delightful art project suitable for preschoolers and young children. Let's dive into the world of bean art!

I have added Amazon links below to different art supplies (they are affiliated links)

Supplies You'll Need:

  1. Beans: Assorted beans in different shapes and colors (e.g., kidney beans, black beans, chickpeas). A great project for using those dry beans found in the back of your pantry that you never used!

  2. Acrylic Paints: Purchase colors to depict desired animals

  3. Canvas Board: Sturdy paper, cardstock, and/or cardboard would also work great for this project!

  4. Glue: Child-safe glue, preferably in a squeeze bottle or glue stick for easier application.

  5. Markers: Permanent markers or fine-tip markers for adding details.

  6. Protective Gear: Aprons or old clothes to protect against glue spills.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace

Choose a clean and spacious area for the art activity. Lay down a newspaper or a plastic tablecloth to protect your work surface from glue and paint.

Step 2: Gather Your Beans

Sort the beans into separate containers or bowls. This helps in easy access and organization during the art project.

Step 3: Choose an Animal Image

Select a simple animal image or outline for your child to replicate using beans. Popular choices include butterflies, fish, birds, and simple animals like cats or dogs.

Step 4: Glue the Beans

Apply glue onto the outline of the animal image using a squeeze bottle. Encourage your child to place the beans onto the glue, following the outline of the animal. Once outlined fill in entire animal with beans.

Step 5: Add Paint

Apply paint directly to the beans once the glue is dried. Encourage creativity! What color would a beak be? What color should the feathers be? Does the animal have blue, green, or brown eyes?

Step 6: Add Background

Once the glue dries and paint is dried, time to add background beans. Fill in the remainder of the area with desired beans (again glue down). Once the glue is dried choose a vibrant color to help your creature pop! Also add any final details to your animal (ex. eye color, teeth, etc)

Step 6: Display and Admire

Allow the artwork to dry completely. Once dry, display the colorful bean animal art proudly in your home. You can frame it, hang it on a wall, or create a special art gallery corner to showcase your child's creativity.

Tips for success:

  • Encourage Exploration: Let your child experiment with different bean shapes and colors to create unique animal designs.

  • Emphasize Fine Motor Skills: Picking up and placing beans helps develop fine motor coordination.

  • Discuss Colors and Shapes: Talk about the colors and shapes of the beans as you work on the project together.

  • Celebrate Creativity: Praise your child's efforts and creativity throughout the art-making process.

Final Thoughts

Creating animal art with colorful beans is a delightful way to combine sensory play with artistic expression. It's a perfect activity for rainy days, playdates, or quiet afternoons at home. Enjoy bonding with your child as you create beautiful and textured art. Happy crafting!
